Why Multi-Tool Blades Wear Out So Quickly
Most oscillating multi-tool blades are made from relatively mild steel with only a very thin heat-treated or coated cutting edge — sometimes with a few brazed carbide tips. This hardened layer is only microns deep, so once the teeth wear or overheat, the hardness is gone.
When steel turns blue, it’s a clear sign the temper has been lost. At that point, you’re cutting with softened base steel that dulls almost immediately. Even so-called “carbide-tipped” blades can be misleading — the bulk of the blade is not carbide, and once the tips are gone, performance drops rapidly. This is why multi-tool blades often have such a short working life.
